If you're thinking about moving to Brevard County or Florida's Space Coast, one of the first things you're probably trying to figure out is where everything is and which area might make the most sense for you.
Because Brevard County is much bigger than most people realize.
It's about 72 miles long. It's shaped by water. And life can feel very different depending on where you choose to live.
Before we start talking about Melbourne, Palm Bay, Viera, Merritt Island, Cocoa Beach, or any of the communities people ask me about all the time, I want to start with the map.
One of the biggest mistakes I see relocation buyers make is they start looking at homes before they understand how Brevard County is laid out.
Once you understand the map, every other decision becomes easier.

Where Is Brevard County Florida?
Brevard County sits on Florida's east coast, about an hour east of Orlando.
We're part of what's known as Florida's Space Coast.
Many people know the area because of the rocket launches, Kennedy Space Center, and our beaches, but when you're relocating here, understanding the geography is one of the most important first steps.
Whether you're moving here for a job, retirement, family, or simply a lifestyle change, knowing where everything is located will help you narrow your options much faster.
Brevard County is located on Florida's east coast, about an hour east of Orlando.
How Big Is Brevard County?
One thing many people don't realize is just how large Brevard County actually is.
We're approximately 72 miles from north to south.
That means your daily life can look very different depending on where you choose to live.
A drive that seems short on a map may not feel short when you're making it every day.
That's why understanding the county layout before you begin your home search is so important.
North, Central & South Brevard
One of the easiest ways to understand Brevard County is to think of it in three sections.
North Brevard
North Brevard includes areas such as Titusville, Mims, Port St. John, and the Kennedy Space Center area.
This part of the county is often associated with space exploration, nature preserves, larger lots, and a quieter pace of life.
Central Brevard
Central Brevard includes communities like Cocoa, Rockledge, Merritt Island, Viera, Suntree, Cape Canaveral, and Cocoa Beach.
Many buyers are drawn to this area because of its central location, shopping, restaurants, employment centers, and proximity to both the beaches and Orlando.
South Brevard
South Brevard includes Melbourne, West Melbourne, Palm Bay, Indialantic, Melbourne Beach, Grant-Valkaria, and surrounding communities.
This area offers everything from historic districts and beachside living to new construction communities and larger residential neighborhoods.
Each area has its own personality, housing options, and lifestyle.

One of the most important things to understand about Florida's Space Coast is that water shapes nearly everything.
You have:
- The Atlantic Ocean
- The Indian River Lagoon
- The Banana River
- The Barrier Island
- Merritt Island

Understanding these waterways helps explain why certain communities feel so different from one another.
Some people want to live directly on the beach.
Others prefer riverfront living.
Some want boating access.
Others simply want to be near the water without paying beachside prices.
Brevard County offers all of those options.
That's one of the reasons so many people fall in love with the area.

Because Brevard County is shaped by water, the causeways play an important role in everyday life.
These bridges connect the mainland to Merritt Island and the barrier island communities.
You may hear locals talk about:
- Pineda Causeway
- Eau Gallie Causeway
- State Road 520
- Beachline Expressway (528)
Depending on where you live, crossing a causeway may become part of your daily routine for work, school, shopping, dining, or simply getting to the beach.
This is one of the reasons I encourage relocation buyers to understand the geography before choosing a neighborhood.

Why Is It Called the Space Coast?
Another major part of Brevard County's identity is the space industry.
The Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral are located right here on Florida's Space Coast.
I actually grew up here and was here for the very first Space Shuttle launch in 1981.
Today, rocket launches are simply part of everyday life.
Whether you're in Titusville, Merritt Island, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne, or Palm Bay, seeing a rocket launch is one of the unique experiences that makes living here so special.
The aerospace industry also plays a major role in the local economy and attracts people from all over the country.
Brevard County's Relationship to Orlando
Another reason many people choose Florida's Space Coast is its location.
Brevard County gives you a coastal lifestyle while still being relatively close to Orlando.
Depending on where you live, you're within reach of:
- Orlando International Airport
- Major employers
- Professional sports
- Theme parks
- Concerts
- Shopping
- Entertainment
But location within Brevard County matters.
North Brevard, Central Brevard, and South Brevard can all feel very different when it comes to travel times and convenience.
That's why understanding the map first is so valuable.
What Area of Brevard County Is Right for You?
The answer depends on how you want to live.
Some people want walkability.
Some want beachside living.
Some want boating access.
Some want newer master-planned communities.
Others prefer established neighborhoods, larger lots, or a quieter pace.
There isn't one best place to live on the Space Coast.
There is only the place that fits your lifestyle, priorities, and daily routine best.
